Sitting is the New Smoking

Have you heard that sitting increases your risk for cardiovascular disease, increased blood pressure, cancer, pain and stiffness? The Mayo Clinic reported that “those who sat for more than eight hours a day with no physical activity had a risk of dying similar to the risks of dying posed by obesity and smoking.” This is not only a problem for office workers but also to those who spend hours a day in front of their home computers, tablets, and TVs.

Join Nancy Harvey of Guiding Star Yoga Therapy for "Sitting is the New Smoking - Recognizing and Managing the Impact of Sitting with Yoga" as we explore the impact of prolonged sitting on heart health, bones, joints, and general well-being. We will explore how yoga helps to develop motivation to get up and move and reduces your risk of health challenges. We will spend time learning a yoga sequence that will get you up and moving and breathing. Participants will leave with a yoga practice that can be used at the office or at home.

Cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Register by August 23rd!

Somatic Yoga

Yoga for Anxiety & Depression

September 8, 4 pm - 5:30 pm

This monthly workshop will explore how stress and life events can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed, sad, and anxious and result in insomnia and other physical and emotional symptoms. We will explore the physical, neurological, mental, and emotional effects of stress. We will use yoga postures, breath work, and meditation to learn how to navigate the stresses of life and come into a better balance. Cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. This workshop does not take the place of professional counseling for individuals with more serious emotional and mental health issues.

Yoga Nidra

September 15, 4:30 pm - 6 pm

Learn to let go and be in a total state of relaxation, releasing tension and stress in the mind and body. This class will begin with intention and movement followed by a guided Yoga Nidra meditation in a supportive, safe environment. Students will be invited to let go of repetitive thoughts and judgments while experiencing a journey deep within where they can truly enjoy and embody a state of being, stillness, and presence. Research shows that 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to 2-4 hours of deep sleep and a regular practice shows reduction in stress and anxiety! Cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

Restorative Yoga

This class will help renew the body and mind by gently supporting the body with props to allow for letting go of tension and stress. This practice can be a wonderful adjunct for healing and nurturing chronic health conditions. 
Cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members. Space is limited to 10 - pre-registration is required!
Sound Bowl Meditation

Through the combination of sound and vibration, we can amplify our personal intentions as well as experience a deep sense of relaxation. Join Certified Sound Healer Chery Murphy for this amazing community sound healing ritual that will combine aromatherapy, the use of natural crystals, and a manifestation meditation to help you focus on what you truly desire. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. Cost is a suggested donation of $10.
Managing Seasonal Changes 
with Ayurveda & Yoga
with Nancy Harvey and Gail Steele

Most of us can describe general feelings of malaise, uneasiness, or other symptoms of body and mind that seem to occur when seasons change. The ancient science of Ayurveda describes imbalances that can occur with seasonal changes and has recommendations on how to cope with those changes. Yoga is the sister science to Ayurveda and there are postures and yoga practices that also help us cope with seasonal transitions. This workshop will give you an understanding of the changes that occur with the transition of the seasons. Gail will describe the Ayurvedic principles and Nancy will lead the participants in a yoga sequence to prepare for the seasonal change. Cost is $35 for members and $40 for non-members per series class. Additional dates: February 23, 2020 & May 31, 2020.
